What a dental laboratory does

The laboratory's role
A dental laboratory makes the restorations and appliances your dentist prescribes — things like crowns, bridges, dentures and nightguards. The laboratory does not examine you, diagnose anything, or decide what treatment you need.
How a digital workflow generally works
- Your dentist takes records, often with a digital scanner instead of a tray impression.
- Your dentist sends those records and a prescription to the laboratory.
- The laboratory reviews the records and asks for anything missing.
- A technician designs the restoration and it is manufactured and finished.
- It is checked, packed and returned to your dentist for fitting.
General expectations
Timeframes, materials and appointment counts vary by case and are set by your dentist. Small adjustments at the fitting appointment are a normal part of treatment.

- What restoration or appliance are you prescribing, and why?
- What records will you take, and will they be digital?
- How long do you expect the laboratory stage to take?
